Department of English Literature

Vision

The department of English envisages developing the students’ proficiency in Communicative English, to transform it into competency in using the academic and professional purposes and to make the students acquire confidence in their ability to read books which provide them with psychological, social, aesthetic and ethical aspects of life and profession.

Mission

To harness the enthusiasm for literature & language to impact professional skills to prepare for a range of careers.

Six decades old, yet vibrant, and as old as the college itself is the department of English. In 1971, BA English Literature was introduced, realizing the need for the study of English language through literature would be an attempt to comprehend life in all its dimensions. The founder Principal of the college, Prof. Narasimhan (1957-61) hailed from the department of English.

Highlights

Uniqueness of the Department

The Department turned into a research centre offering full time and part time M.Phil and Ph.D programmes. It has a successful and vibrant collection of best academics specialized in the areas of ELT, Journalism, Translation, Women studies and Communicative skills in English along with British, American, Common wealth and Indian Literature. British Council trained faculty being part of the Department has signed an MOU with the council to prepare students for the Business Certificate Examinations. Professors of eminence and experience are invited to chisel the mind frame of the students through Musa Fraternity, the Literary Association. ‘Myriad’, a Literary Quarterly is brought out to kindle and encourage the creativity of the students. ‘Mask’-The Theatre Club paves a way for exhibiting the dramatic talents and to shed off the fear and build confidence. The Department caters to the various needs of the students by offering them, Bridge Course to initiate the students for the tertiary level of learning and Fluency Programme to face the interview board successfully. The department as a whole tries to create a dynamic and exciting college culture, one that prizes quality, inspires and cultivates leadership and enhances the [personality of the students.
