Department Profile

UG Department of Chemistry

Vision

VISION
The Department of Chemistry aspires to be among the top in the nation by preparing the students in such a way that they are self reliant, highly informed and a better choice in the demanding and ever changing world.

Mission

MISSION
The teaching of Chemistry aims to: gear the students to be liberative, transformative and empowering the Learner and the Learned (Teacher)

Category:
UG Chemistry

The department of chemistry was established in the year 1957 and undergraduate B.Sc. Chemistry programme was introduced in the year 1965 with the great efforts of Prof.M. Alkondan. From then on, the department has been steadily marching forward and now it offers research programmes like M.Phil. and Ph.D. both full time and  part time to the students. The department has been actively involved in various research activities. The department laboratory is well furnished and equipped with instruments necessary for the students to carry out their experiments. The research laboratory has been equipped with modern analytical instruments and a well established environmental laboratory. Most of the faculties are highly qualified and are actively involved in both academic and research activities. The students are encouraged to take internships/training in reputed industries and national laboratories. The department also offers extension activities for the students in water quality assessment and monitoring the ground water quality in and around Pollachi.

Our Leaders are

  1. Prof. M. Alkondan (1961-1974)
  2. Prof.R. Mahadevan (1975-1997)
  3. Prof.V. Venkatachalapathy (1997-2001)
  4. Dr.V. Sakthi (2001-2012)
  5. Dr.P. Kalaamani (2012-2016)
  6. Dr. A. Ayyasamy (2016 -2020)
  7. Dr. Indumathy Ramasamy(2020- Present)

Laboratory facilities available at our department are

Highlights

Curriculum is so designed that it imparts sound fundamentals of chemistry and special emphasize is given to hands-on- experimental work
Periodical revision of syllabus is also being carried out with experts in the field
The department offers research programmes like M.Phil. and Ph.D.
ICT enabled teaching and learning facilities
Departmental library with more than 200 chemistry reference books
Guest Lectures, seminars and workshops are being conducted every year
Students are being encouraged to take up internships and summer projects in nearby industries and other reputed academic institutions
The students have been participating regularly in inter-collegiate competitions and have won prizes in various events
The students are being motivated to participate in workshops, seminars and conferences conducted by other colleges/institutions
Every year our department is proud to send atleast two students to reputed institutions like Bharathiar University, The Gandhigram Rural Institute, Deemed University, and National Institute of Technology, Trichy

Association

The structure of benzene by Kekule is one of the most significant discoveries in organic chemistry and was the logo to our chemistry association with the name ALCHEMY. Just as six carbon atoms of the benzene occupy six corners of the hexagon, a chemistry student needs to develop his knowledge in the six important branches of chemistry namely,

Organic Chemistry
Inorganic Chemistry
Physical Chemisty
Analytical Chemistry
Applied Chemistry
Practical Chemistry

A student who gains expertise in all these branches would become an outstanding chemist. The chemistry association conducts seminars and guest lectures periodically. Every year, during the inauguration of chemistry association, the department honors the students who excel in academics.

For the successful conduct of association activities throughout the year, a student council comprising President, Vice president, Secretary, Joint Secretary, Treasurer I and Treasurer II is elected.
