The Department of Botany along with the Department of Horticulture and plantation crops, Government of Tamil Nadu, jointly organized an event on 10.01.2024 for promoting green practices. In this event fruit tree saplings were provided for subsidized price. The primary goal of the event was to foster environmental consciousness within the community by promoting green practices and encouraging sustainable living. This event was organized specially on the eve of Pongal by the Department. For this event more than 100 Fruit tree saplings which included the saplings of Mango tree, Java plum tree, Pomegranate tree, Lemon tree and Amla tree were arranged for selling at a subsidized price. The Head of the Department of Botany, Dr. A. Logamadevi initiated the program with her warm welcome address. Dr. R. Muthukumaran, Principal of the college, complimented the event. The
Department staffs showed their involvement in promoting such an event. Mrs. R. Vasumathi, Assistant Director of Horticulture and Mrs. M. Suganthi, Horticulture officer, were invited as special guests for the event. The special guests shared their views on sustainable gardening practices and encouraged for developing plant growing habits. The event attracted a diverse community of students and staffs who were interested in buying the saplings. Five of the fruit tree saplings were distributed for an individual at a subsidized price of Rs.50 by receiving a copy of the buyer’s aadhar card. Initial feedback from attendees highlighted a positive shift in awareness regarding environmental issues. Many expressed a newfound interest in incorporating more greenery into their living spaces and adopting eco-friendly habits. The plant selling event continued for the next day to achieve its goal of fostering environmental consciousness by providing an engaging platform for learning, community involvement, and the promotion of sustainable practices. The positive response indicated a growing interest in environmental responsibility in building a more sustainable and environmentally aware society.
