Objectives of the program

  • To formally launch the PG Botany association for the academic year 2024-2025, with a focus on promoting academic and extracurricular activities in the field of botany among postgraduate students.
  • To raise awareness about the conservation of plant biodiversity and the importance of protecting endangered and endemic species in the face of ecological threats.
  • To explore how plant diversity contributes to different ecosystems North Western Himalayas, India

Introduction

The inauguration of the PG Botany Association “PG Planta” for the academic year 2024-2025 took place on October 3, 2024, at Dr. Abdul Kalam Arangam. The event featured a guest lecture by Dr. S.P. Subramani, focusing on the rich plant diversity of India from ecological and taxonomic perspectives.

The program commenced  with an Invocation followed by a Prayer Song performed by the II M.Sc. students, setting a serene tone for the occasion.

  1. Welcome Address
    Dr. R. Rakkimuthu, Head of the PG and Research Department of Botany, welcomed the attendees, highlighting the importance of plant diversity and the objectives of the new association.
  2. Felicitation
    • Dr. R. Manickachezian, Principal of NGM College, honored the chief guest with a memento.
    • Dr. D. Sowmiya, Assistant Professor, PG and Research Department of Botany, also presented the chief guest with a fruit basket, recognizing his contributions to the field.
  3. Presidential Address
    In his address, Dr. R. Manickachezian emphasized the significance of botanical studies in understanding ecological balance and sustainable development.
  4. Distribution of Badges
    Badges were distributed by Dr. A. Logamadevi, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Botany to the office bearers of the PG Planta association for the year 2024, marking the formal establishment of the new team.
  5. Guest Introduction
    Dr. P. Sathishkumar, Assistant Professor, PG and Research Department of Botany,  introduced Dr. S.P. Subramani, outlining his credentials and contributions to plant sciences, setting the stage for the guest lecture.

Guest Lecture

Dr. S.P. Subramani delivered an insightful lecture on “Exploring the Plant Diversity of India in Ecological and Taxonomic Perspective.” He covered several key topics:

  • Plant Diversity in India: Discussing the various plant species found across different ecological zones.
  • Ecological Importance: Emphasizing the role of plants in maintaining ecological balance and their significance in various ecosystems.
